To-do list vs To-be list

For the first time ever, my wife set her 2024 goals before I did. This was a surprising turn of events, as I’ve always been the one initiating our goal-setting sessions.

What struck me most about her goals wasn’t their timing but their essence. Unlike the traditional, outcome-driven goals we often set—focused on productivity or tangible results—hers were about being. Her goals centered on becoming a better person, nurturing her character, and living with intentionality, rather than chasing metrics or milestones.

It was inspiring.

A Shift in Perspective

In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to get consumed by the mindset of achievement. We’re constantly measuring and quantifying—counting calories, steps, work hours, or tasks completed. While these measurements can be helpful, they often lead us to equate our worth with productivity.

But when you pause to reflect, you realize life isn’t just about what we do—it’s about who we are. Our character, intentions, and relationships hold far more weight than our to-do lists or accomplishments.

This year, inspired by my wife’s approach, I’ve decided to take a step back from the relentless pursuit of outcomes and instead focus on the profound art of Being.

What Does It Mean to Be?

In the context of faith, Being isn’t passive; it’s deeply intentional. It’s about becoming the person we aspire to be, guided by the best examples from our tradition and teachings.

It means:

  • Being present in our moments of worship, family, and work.
  • Reflecting on our character and striving for sincerity and kindness.
  • Embracing life’s trials and joys as opportunities to grow closer to Allah.

If we spend 2025 simply checking off tasks without savoring the moments, we risk overlooking the beauty and lessons Allah has woven into our daily experiences.

Embracing Presence and Reflection

This year, I aim to nurture Presence in my life—to be fully engaged and aware in the here and now. Through intentional reflection, I hope to better understand the trials I face, appreciate the blessings I’ve been given, and deepen my connection with Allah.

By focusing on Being, I want to ensure that my goals align not just with external achievements but with the internal growth of my soul and character.

This Week’s Reminder: As you set your own goals for 2025, take a moment to reflect:

  • Are your goals focused on outcomes, or do they nurture your character and faith?
  • How can you shift from doing to being, savoring the moments and deepening your connection with Allah?

May 2025 be a year of growth in who we are and a journey of meaningful reflection and presence.
