Dealing with a Wandering mind

Lately, my mind has felt like it’s on an endless journey, wandering through streams of thoughts that pull me in countless directions. This mental restlessness has left me feeling anxious and overwhelmed, struggling to sleep at night and focus during the day.

In these moments, my emotions are often at their most vulnerable, and I find myself questioning and doubting aspects of my life. Have you ever felt the same way?

A Conversation That Changed My Perspective

Last Saturday, I met with a dear friend and teacher, Shaykh Justin Parrot. He’s written extensively about Islamic mindfulness and has published helpful articles on Yaqeen Institute.

During our conversation—recorded for a podcast episode—I shared my struggles with a restless mind and the endless thoughts that seem to suffocate my peace. I was searching for answers, hoping for a mindfulness technique or meditation practice to help ease my mind.

What Shaykh Justin shared with me was simpler and far deeper than I anticipated.

He said: “Say Astaghfirullah, Shahbaz. That is all you need to say.”

The Power of Astaghfirullah

He referenced a narration from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
“If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he did not reckon.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud: 1518)

At first, I wondered how something so simple could counter the complexity of a restless mind. But later that evening, I put it to the test.

I went to the mosque for Salat al-Isha, hoping the prayer would bring me clarity. Yet, even in prayer, my mind wandered, racing with thoughts that robbed me of stillness and focus.

Then, like a breath of fresh air after being submerged underwater, it hit me.

I quietly began to say, “Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah.”

And with those words, the relief came.

A Simple Practice for Calm and Clarity

Astaghfirullah is more than a phrase; it’s a lifeline. It’s a connection to Allah that brings solace to a restless heart and peace to a wandering mind.

When your mind feels overwhelmed, when your emotions swirl like a storm, take a moment to pause and say:
“Astaghfirullah.”

This Week’s Challenge:
The next time you feel your thoughts spiraling or your emotions intensifying, turn to Astaghfirullah. Let its soothing embrace calm your heart and center your mind.

In its simplicity lies profound strength—a reminder that in seeking Allah’s forgiveness, we also find relief, clarity, and peace.

May these words bring you tranquility and guide your wandering mind back home.
